This week we’re giving away five copies of a new book that will be of great interest to many Pray Tell readers.
Paul F. Bradshaw and Maxwell E. Johnson, two of today’s foremost scholars in liturgical history and liturgical theology, have collaborated to produce The Eucharistic Liturgies: Their Evolution and Interpretation (Liturgical Press). It is a companion volume to Johnson’s The Rites of Christian Initiation: Their Evolution and Interpretation, which has become a standard text in graduate theology programs.
The Eucharistic Liturgies offers a rich presentation of contemporary scholarship on the Eucharist. It is structured historically, proceeding from the origins of the Eucharist up to today. Besides considering the Roman Rite, it also explores the eucharistic liturgies of the Christian East and the other important rites of the West.
The book’s approach is theological as well as historical. The authors give particular attention to the most challenging ecumenical issues of the past five hundred years—real presence and eucharistic sacrifice—and the way these ideas have been expressed in liturgical prayer.
