Your prayers requested–updated 4/18/12

News has reached us that our fellow-contributor and friend, Fr. Cody Unterseher,ย fell seriously ill yesterday and is hospitalized. Hisย parents have flown in to New York to be with him during this critical time. We invite you to join with all ofย us at Pray Tell and with his parish community (Christ Church, Bronxville) in praying for Fr. Cody and his family.

Sarah Kraemer, Senior Warden, offered this suggested prayer in an e-mail sent to the parishioners of Christ Church. In solidarity, we share it with you here:

Lord Jesus Christ, Good Shepherd of the sheep, you gather
the lambs in your arms and carry them in your bosom: We
commend to your loving care your servant Cody.ย  Relieve his pain,
guard him from all danger, restore to him your gifts of
gladness and strength, and raise him up to a life of service to
you.ย  Hear us, we pray, for you dear Name’s sake. Amen.

UPDATE 4/18/12

From Christ Church we’ve received notice that the parish has set up a Caring Bridges website at which messages can be left for Cody, and updates read.

http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/codycunterseher

We have not received any specific information on Cody’s medical condition,ย only the general acknowledgement that this periodย remains one of considerable danger. It is cheering to hear, however, that he is conscious and can receive visitors.ย The notice alsoย includedย a tidbitย which stikes us as touchingly suggestive of the person we know and regard with such affection:ย “Reading materials are in his room and he enjoys being read to.” You can take the scholar out of his library…

Continued prayers andย best wishes from all of us at Pray Tell!

James 5: 14-15: Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

May God bless him and may he make a full recovery.

I’ve always thought that the Lavabo is a beautiful prayer for the intention of priests specifically and for all believers in general.

“I wash my hands in innocence, and go around your altar, O Lord, singing aloud a song of thanksgiving, and telling all your wondrous deeds. O Lord, I love the house in which you dwell, and the place where your glory abides. Do not sweep me away with sinners, nor my life with the bloodthirsty, those in whose hands are evil devices, and whose right hands are full of bribes. But as for me, I walk in my integrity; redeem me, and be gracious to me. My foot stands on level ground; in the great congregation I will bless the Lord.” (Psalm 26: 6 — 12 NRSV)

May Fr. Cody soon stand on level ground. May he return to his altar and congregation soon.

Friends, it seems Fr. Cody’s illness is quite serious. This was posted today on his friend’s Facebook page. Please continue all your prayers.

A few of you are asking about Cody. Here is a note from the Dean of General Seminary:

    Dear Sisters and Brothers,

We have received word from the Senior Warden of Christ Church, Bronxville, where the Rev. Cody Unterseher, a 2009 STM graduate of General, is Priest Associate, that Fr. Unterseher suffered bleeding from a cerebral aneurism on Friday. He was taken to Columbia University Medical Center and underwent surgery. His condition is, of course, very serious.

Please hold Fr. Unterseher, his parents, and all who love him in prayer, and, with them, those who care for him in these critical days.

  13. Fr. Unterseher has been in my prayers and Mass intentions this Divine Mercy Sunday and in a special way at our Divine Mercy devotions and Benediction.

  14. Hope he’s better soon – prayers.

  15. And prayers…..
