“World Vocal Traditions” Chant Workshops in Colorado, May 2012

The artistic patrimony of the church is a subject of continuing interest to the world. Here is one example of musicians and artists taking inspiration from music of the church and its context to share it with contemporary musicians from a variety of traditions in the hope of fostering further understanding of all the world’s cultures.

Medieval Roots: Gregorian Chant I – Introduction to Gregorian Chant: Singing from the Neumes,” a workshop,  and “Medieval Roots: Gregorian Chant II – Bringing Gregorian Chant to Life in Voice and Ritual (Compline),” a practicum, are two events taking place in Boulder, CO, and Denver, CO, in early May. The events will be led by guest artist Christopher Fülling and hosted by Inventing Earth.

Christopher Fülling is a director of stage, opera, and ritual theatre and a performer specializing in 17th century works, new music, and Gregorian chant. He is also Founding Artistic Director of the Art Monastery project, a venture which seeks to combine the principles of monasticism and intentional communities to creativity and the art-making process.

Inventing Earth is a non-profit organization that sponsors integrative works across cultures, disciplines, and eras. The chant workshops are part of their 2012 series with sessions ranging from Gregorian and Hildegard chants to Byzantine, Sephardic, Persian, Indian, and other vocal traditions with early, Medieval, or ancient origins.
