Rita Ferrone is an award-winning writer and frequent speaker on issues of liturgy and church renewal in the Roman Catholic tradition. She is currently a contributing writer and columnist for Commonweal magazine and an independent scholar. The author of several books about liturgy, she is most widely known for her commentary on Sacrosanctum Concilium (Liturgy: Sacrosanctum Concilium, Paulist Press). Her most recent book, Pastoral Guide to Pope Francis's Desiderio Desideravi, was published by Liturgical Press.

    So far the abusive clerical elite has expended its abusiveness on theologians, victims of sexual abuse, nuns, gays and lesbians, women in some circumstances, but now, unable to keep their abusiveness within such channels, they have taken aim at the entire people of God, making the liturgy itself a field for their abusive exercise of power. The irrationality of what is happening has a deeper rationale: if you cultivate evil, abusive habits, they take over, so that you are no longer able to contain them within limits.
