GOSPEL COMMUNION: 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time

February 13 2022 : 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today’s Gospel reading gives us the Lucan Beatitudes, where “Blessed are you” is contrasted with “Woe to you”. The Psallite Communion Antiphon links the idea of those who weep, who are poor, who are hated, and who hunger and thirst with the satisfied hunger and slaked thirst received in Communion, fulfilling the Father’s promise that they (we) will be satisfied. Indeed, “blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD!” (1st Reading)

The psalm/canticle verses are taken from the “normal” Beatitudes (Matthew) and extracts from Psalm 103: the Lord who is rich in mercy, whose love is everlasting on those who fear him, and whose justice reaches out to their children’s children — in short, the Lord who satisfies those who keep his covenant and follow his will.

The 3/4 measures whose rhythm emphasizes “Blest” deliberately give way to a 3/2 measure underlining our hunger and thirst.

A demo recording will be found here.
