GOSPEL COMMUNION: 34th Sunday in Ordinary Time

November 21 2021 : 34th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Christ the King

Today’s antiphon results from a reflection on the words of Jesus at the end of the Gospel reading:

Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice. (John 18:37)

and these words from the end of the 1st Readings:

His dominion is an everlasting dominion
that shall not be taken away,
his kingship shall not be destroyed. (Daniel 7:14)

The antiphon, which can be sung as a round in up to four parts, also echoes the words of the blessing of the Easter Candle:

Christ yesterday and today / the Beginning and the End
the Alpha / and the Omega
All time belongs to him / and all the ages

Jesus is Lord of all the ages, the King of the Universe.

The verses are from Psalm 29, with its focus on the sovereign Lord, full of power, and splendour, and glory.
