GOSPEL COMMUNION: All Saints

November 1 2021 : All Saints

Inspired by the 1st Reading from Revelation 7, the Collegeville Composers Group fashioned an antiphon based on Rev 22:17

The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” Let the hearer say, “Come.” Let the one who thirsts come forward, and the one who wants it receive the gift of life-giving water.

and Rev 19:9

Then the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who have been called to the wedding feast of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These words are true; they come from God.”

We, too, are called to share in the wedding feast of the Lamb.

The antiphon in the Roman Missal, Graduale and 1998 Antiphonal is Matthew 5:8-10, taken from today’s Gospel, Matthew 5:1-12a. One of the options for verses in the 1998 Antiphonal is Isaiah 66:10-14a. Accordingly, Psallite provides a dual selection of verses: Matthew 5:3-10 (cf. those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied) and Isaiah 66:10-14a (cf. those who will drink deeply with delight from the bosom of Jerusalem).

The psalm tone is a close cousin of the one used for the Song for the Table on the 5th Sunday of Lent, Year C, whose antiphon melody You Are My Hiding Place, O Lord, with its striking “blue” note, strongly influences the final phrase of today’s antiphon.
