May 2 2021: 5th Sunday of Easter

Today’s antiphon comes directly from the Gospel reading:

I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower (Jn 15:1)

and

I am the vine, you are the branches.
Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit. (Jn 15:5)

as reflected in the Communion antiphon of the day. Following the suggestion in the 1998 Antiphonal and 2012 Antiphonary, verses are taken from Ps 79(80).

As we sing this antiphon in the Communion procession, we may recall other phrases from the Gospel reading: “Remain in me, as I remain in you” and “Without me you can do nothing.”
