Fr. James Martin has announced that Fr. John Giuliani, well-known iconographer and founder of the Amalia & Nicola Giuliani Foundation for Religion and the Arts, has passed away. Giuliani created beautiful iconography that highlighted Native American artwork and culture. He stated that his artwork celebrates “the soul of the Native American as the original spiritual presence on this continent.”

You can view his iconography on his website.

May he rest in peace.

Respectful farewell to Fr. John Giuliani. Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord and let your perpetual light shine upon the departed soul.

I recall going to a Mass he celebrated at the Benedictine Grange’s barn chapel in Redding Connecticut in the late 80s. The whole thing had a charmingly earnest hippy vibe about it (in my memory, everyone had on Birkenstocks and hand-woven ponchos–probably not a totally accurate memory), which I very much enjoyed, though I remember thinking it would be a bit much for me to handle on a weekly basis. Rest in Peace.
