GOSPEL COMMUNION: 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time

July 12, 2020: Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Neither of the two antiphons offered by the Missal has any direct connection with the readings of the day.

Despite the fact that the Gospel periscope is the Parable of the Sower, and seeds and sowing are also present in the Responsorial Psalm and Gospel Acclamation, the Psallite antiphon for today takes its rise from the 1st Reading, Isaiah 55:10-11, where we find

Giving seed to the one who sows
and bread to the one who eats,
so shall my word be
that goes forth from my mouth.

The psalm is a concatenation of extracts from Wisdom 16 and Psalms 78, 23, and 145, all on the theme of God who gives his people bread to eat. The half-antiphon at the end of each line reminds us that we are fed not only by the Bread of Life but by the Word of Life.
