Today is the 34th anniversary of the assassination of Archbishop Oscar Romero. He is recognized as a martyr and saint around the world.ย Michael Glen Bell and Duane W.H. Arnold from “The Project” are sending around this video. Do watch it. As they write, “Romero’s message of social justice, non-violence and self-sacrifice are needed today as never before.”

Pray for us Monseรฑor, and may the church you served and loved, formally recognize your sainthood soon.

It is an embarassment that Romero has been honoured with a statue on the west front of Westminster Abbey for over 15 years now, but images of him may not yet be placed on or venerated in Roman Catholic buildings.
It is a scandal that his cause has only got to “Servant of God” status while the pope who granted him that status (17 years after the martyrdom) is to be declared “Saint” a few weeks from now.

I’m praying that Francis will acknowledge a category of Latin American Martyrs and canonize them all under the title of Oscar Romero and Companions. There is a priest from my diocese who could be included in that group. He returned to his mission in Guatemala knowing clearly that it might cost him his life, but his desire to stand with his people prevailed. He was murdered in his residence by thugs who couldn’t abide his bringing good news to the poor. Santo Oscar & Santo Stan, pray for us.

@Fr. Jack Feehily – comment #3:
Fr. Jack – yes, served in the Peten, Guatemala and got to visit Stan’s parish and some missions and the place where he was murdered.
The indigeneous population honor his life to this day.
Agree – hope Francis does something like that. Would also hope that the Vatican archives would release the actual documentation around JPII and what happened in the month that Romero was murdered in terms of papal decisions.

Yes, it seems strange to honor Romero but not the Jesuits and the religious/lay women also killed in El Salvador.
