In preparation for producing a documentary of the Paschal Triduum 2011, I recently oversaw the production of several half-hour TV programs following the elect on their journey to the baptismal waters at St Thomas More Catholic Church in Chapel Hill, NC.

Houses of Catechumens?

Part of me senses that if we are serious about apprenticing people in the Christian way of life such that it permeates every aspect of their lives this formation must be done in an all encompassing environment of faith from dawn to dusk of every day (such as a family or a seminary) and not just on Sundays.

Election Day

Today, around the world, dioceses are celebrating the Rite of Election, the second “step” of catechumens in their journey toward the Easter sacraments. In this rite, which closes the period of the catechumenate proper, the Church hears testimony as to the catechumens’ readiness, and confirms that they are fit to take part in the next great celebration of the sacraments, at Easter.

Let us pray for our Catechumens and Elect

Once again it is that great season when catechumens (they’re the “elect” during Lent after the Rite of Election) are preparing for baptism at the Easter Vigil. We stand before great and awesome mysteries. Throughout this Lent, let us pray for those preparing for baptism.
