GOSPEL COMMUNION: Feast of the Transfiguration

August 6, 2022 : Feast of the Transfiguration

The Communion Antiphon in the ICEL 1998 Antiphonal inspired this antiphon:

When the Lord appears,
we shall be like him;
we shall see him as he is. (1 John 3:2)

more recently rendered in the 2010 Antiphonary as:

When Christ appears, we shall be like him,
for we shall see him as he is.

The Collegeville Composers also looked at the NAB translation of this entire verse, which runs:

Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we shall be has not yet been revealed. We do know that when it is revealed we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.

The word “revealed” seemed appropriate for a feast celebrating a theophany of the Lord, which we hear about in today’s  Gospel in all three years of the cycle (this year, Luke).

To aid meditation on the revealing of Christ, the antiphon works as a simple two-part canon, whose ebb and flow is constantly revealing the text, and there is an additional descant for bass voices.

The psalm tone is superimposed on the music of the antiphon. The text, from Psalm 27, follows the suggestion of both Antiphonal and Antiphonary.
