GOSPEL COMMUNION: Feast of the Holy Family

December 26 2021 : Feast of the Holy Family

Today’s antiphon takes its rise from these lines in the 2nd Reading (1 John 3:1-2, 21-24):

Beloved, we are God’s children now;
what we shall be has not yet been revealed.
We do know that when it is revealed we shall be like him,
for we shall see him as he is. (1 John 3:2)

In Holy Communion, God’s love for us is both hidden and revealed.

Verses are taken from Psalm 98, one of the archetypal Christmas psalms, and Ephesians 1.

The antiphon may appear long, but each short phrase is sung first by a cantor and repeated by all, so no memorizing is necessary. The last time, the final phrase can be repeated by several voices overlapping, creating the effect of Christmastide bells.
