Choral Composition Competition from ND

The University of Notre Dame is announcing Liturgy Alive, its third annual composition competition to foster creative new choral music for the Catholic Mass. To encourage composers to write music for the Church, choirs that lead music in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at Notre Dame are awarding prizes for winning sacred choral compositions. The winning compositions will be premiered at the Basilica in 2021.

Monetary prizes range up to $2,000. More information and specific rules can be found online here. Deadline for submission is 11:59 PM EST on April 5, 2021. The winner(s) will be contacted in April announced May, 2021.

  1. As with previous Notre Dame competitions, it is to be noted that by entering you automatically forfeit in perpetuity all rights, including copyright, in your submission, whether or not you win the competition. I must confess to being doubtful about the ethics of such stipulations.

  2. You’d imagine, wouldn’t you – given the twelve tribes of Israel and the same number of apostles – that works in the style of Schoenberg, Webern, Berg and their musical progeny (dare I say ‘disciples’!) would get a look in!
