GOSPEL COMMUNION: 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time

June 28, 2020: Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year A)

This Sunday’s Gospel has Jesus saying:

Whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me
is not worthy of me.
Whoever finds his life will lose it,
and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. (Matthew 10:38-39)

which was transformed into today’s antiphon.

The psalm, with verses extracted from Ps 116, makes the link with Eucharist explicit in verses 13 and 17:

The cup of salvation I will raise;
I will call on the Lord’s name.

A thanksgiving sacrifice I make;
I will call on the Lord’s name.

Singing these words on our way to Communion helps us to welcome the newness of life that God gives us (Romans 6:4) and welcome the needy and the sorrowful (2 Kings 4).
