GOSPEL COMMUNION: Fifth Sunday of Lent

March 29, 2020: Fifth Sunday of Lent (Year A)

John 11:25-26 from this Sunday’s Gospel is the starting point for today’s antiphon:

“I am the resurrection and the life;
whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live,
and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.”

As we process to Communion, we can be reminded of John 6:51:

“I am the living bread that came down from heaven;
whoever eats this bread will live forever.”

The Psallite setting offers two options for verses, both using the same psalm tone, a simplified version of the antiphon melody: extracts from John 12, or once again Psalm 34, the classic Communion Psalm. The repetition of “never die” at the end of the antiphon gently renews the promise of the Gospel.
