March 15, 2020: Third Sunday of Lent (Year A)
The rendition of the Communion Antiphon in the Missal seemed rather prosaic:
For anyone who drinks it, says the Lord,
the water I shall give will become in him
a spring welling up to eternal life.
– John 4:13-14, extracted from this Sunday’s Gospel, John 4:5-42
The Collegeville Composers, therefore, constructed an antiphon based on a concatenation of extracts from the same Gospel:
Give me this water (John 4:15)
The water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life (John 4:14)
True worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth (John 4:23)
The antiphon is used as an ostinato with verses superimposed. The Missal suggests Isaiah 12, but the Collegeville Composers preferred to use John 4:13-14 and 34 from the Gospel, together with Psalm 34, the classic Communion Psalm. The music has a distinctly processional feel to it.
