February 9,2020: 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time
None of the suggested antiphons in the various sources seemed to really connect with the scriptures on this day, so the Collegeville Composers opted to re-use an antiphon from the 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A, just two weeks previously. If anything, it is even more appropriate for this day, quoting directly from the Gospel, Matthew 5:14 and 16, and alluding strongly to the 1st Reading from Isaiah 58, the psalm response (112:4a) and the Gospel Acclamation (John 8:12).
The chosen accompanying psalm/canticle verses today utilize extracts from that 1st Reading and Gospel, together with parts of Psalm 27 as on the 3rd Sunday. In particular, we note Isaiah’s exhortation to
Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the homeless,
clothe the naked you see and turn not away
Then your light shall break forth and shine like the dawn,
with your justice before you, God’s glory behind you.
