Funeral services were held on May 25, 2019 for Lutheran liturgical leader Mons Teig, 84.
Teig was professor of worship at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN for 19 years, until his retirement in 2005. Through his work on the staff of the American Lutheran Church (predecessor to the ELCA), he became known globally as a worship and liturgy expert.
Teig chaired the Inter-Lutheran Conferences for Worship, the Inter-Lutheran Festival of Worship and Witness, and the Lutheran Book of Worship National Introduction Committee. He was a member of Lutheran World Federation Worship Consultations and chaired the Joint Committee on Worship. He also served as a member of the Consultation on Common Texts and the Bishop’s Committee for Forming a Roman Catholic-Lutheran Service of the Word. He was affiliated with the North American Academy of Liturgy and the Societas Liturgica.
Teig attended Waldorf and Concordia colleges, held masters’ degrees from Luther Seminary, Union Seminary, Notre Dame; and earned a Ph.D from Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley.
Teig is survived by his wife of 61 years, Shirley, two children, and six grandchildren.
