INTROITUS: 5th Sunday of Easter

Cantate Domino canticum novum, alleluia: quia mirabilia fecit Dominus, alleluia: ante conspectum gentium revelavit justitiam suam, alleluia, alleluia.

“Sing to the Lord a new song, hallelujah, for he has done admirable things, hallelujah. He revealed his justice in the sight of the nations, hallelujah.” (Ps 98(97):1–2)

Sung by Br. Jacob Berns, OSB, of St. John’s Abbey.

Welcome to the 6th Gregorian mode: Strong, clear, unambiguous, peaceful. A long chant, but easy to sing, joyful, and calm. We had the mirabilia (admirable things) on Easter Sunday, here they are again. The message of salvation has grown and become an integral part of the Church. Eventually, we all hope for peace and life and justice, and this introit gives us a foretaste of what cannot be fulfilled in this life, but what can become a formative part of our lives here and now.
