May 12, 2019 : 4th Sunday of Easter
The images of sheep and shepherd appear in the Responsorial Psalm, 2nd Reading, Gospel Acclamation and Gospel reading of today’s Mass. It therefore seemed appropriate to use Psalm 23, one of the options suggested in the Graduale Romanum and the 1998 ICEL Antiphonal. There is nothing else we need when we receive the refreshment that God gives us.
The treatment of this psalm, which appears a number of times in the Lectionary, is one of the earliest and most popular Psallite settings to make use of the Collegeville Composers’ “trademark” mini-refrain at the end of each line of the psalm verses, here a quarter-refrain that in fact fits very well with the psalm text.
