WSJ: Married Priests in the Amazon?

The Wall Street Journal put up an in-depth article yesterday, “Catholic Church Considers Married Priests to Ease Amazon Clergy Shortage.” The issue arises in part because of the severe shortage of ordained clergy – there are 7,000 Catholics for every priest in South America.

“There are communities here that do not receive the Eucharist during an entire year,” said Bishop Adolfo Zon Pereira of Alto Solimões. Cardinal Beniamino Stella, Vatican prefect for clergy, speaks of a “sacramental emergency.” Pope Francis is thought to be open to the proposal, and it is expected to be discussed at the Amazon synod taking place next year.
