Easter Timor, which is 97% Catholic, is struggling with the growing number of young males wanting to go to seminary. ACA-News reports that every year 300 young people apply for seminary after junior high school, but there is only room to accept 90.
There are now about 220 priests to serve the 1.26 million Catholics in the country. “We still need more diocesan priests to serve [a huge number of] people,” said Bishop Norberto Do Amaral of Maliana.
To cope with the problem, a second minor seminary has been opened in Maliana. A new building was not built – the seminarians instead will occupy a renovated building the diocese owns.
