  1. Have apparently walked over this church many times! We have gone to the laLeche shrine soon after the birth of each of our children, and you have to walk through the grounds of the Nombre de Dios mission to get to it. This is also only a few yards from the site of the first Mass ever said in the New World. St. Augustine is a fascinating place in general.

When I was Director of Music at the newer St. Joseph’s Church in Palm Bay, I used to play funerals at the oldest Church still in use in Florida (or so I was told), the cemetary chapel of St. Joseph’s in Palm Bay which was built around 1900… quite a bit younger than the site at St. Augustine.

  2. My son was baptized in the 1962 form at the Shrine of La Leche. It was beautiful (and quite hot that day).

  3. Yeah… it can be really hot at times… no AC in the shrine either (I assume you were in the chapel out on the grounds, not in the “gift shop” building…)

I was there just last Summer and they were in the process of doing the excavation/ renovation work there.
