Papal audience for Cardinal Cañizares Llovera

From today’s Daily Bulletin from the Vatican:

Il Santo Padre Benedetto XVI ha ricevuto questa mattina in Udienza: Card. Antonio Cañizares Llovera, Prefetto della Congregazione per il Culto Divino e la Disciplina dei Sacramenti.

I have no idea what the Pope discussed with the prefect of the worship congregation. Probably best not to speculate. (Or hope?)

  1. Maybe it has to do with the apostolic exhortation just published. References there to the book of Psalms follow the Hebrew Masoretic numbering that is adopted by scripture scholars, English-speaking Catholics and King James Christians. Wonder of wonders: even the Spanish-language translation of the document uses the Masoretic numbering. Someone could be discussing this with Prefect Cañizares, so that we can eliminate the confusion about why “The Lord is my shepherd” is known as “Psalm 23” to Gringos and “Salmo 22” to Latinos! (As for the Orthodox, who follow the Septuagint numbering, maybe they will come around later!)

  2. +OMG+

Maybe they discussed the long-awaited promotion for Tony Ward after his excellent handling of the translation of the Missal into English of sorts.

or perhaps the Audience went something like this:

    Cardinal: “Heilige Vater: HABEMUS PROBLEMAM!”

Pope: “Ach mein Gott in Himmel! Das Rinfleisch ist angry still that I had the Swiss Guards revoke his pass to the cadets’ gym! I told him to make himself useful for die Kristus’ sake, but I did not mean THIS useful! Der freekin dumkopf!”

  3. +JMJ+

Regarding the Apostolic Exhortation, maybe he’s curious who did the footnote research for paragraph 3. Paul VI’s “Summi Dei Verbum” is not about biblical issues, but about seminaries in general. Just because it’s got “Dei Verbum” in the title doesn’t make it relevant!

    1. Summi Dei Verbum is about making seminaries into places where the Incarnate Word becomes the model for priestly life:
Now if the imitation of the Incarnate Word is obligatory for all Christians, it is particularly binding on those whom He calls to become His representatives before men, no less by sanctity of life than by the preaching of the Gospel and the administration of the sacraments.

  4. Oh please get us on track with the Psalms — impose the Masoretic numbering by all means — but this would also mean revising the numbering of the psalms in editions of patristic texts etc.

  5. Que ceux qui insistent sur la langue italienne connaissent leurs propres insuffisances! Bon sang! Qu’est-ce qui se passe ici? Tout le monde sait que la culture francophone habite un niveau nettement plus élevé que les autres.

Etc, etc, till the cows come home…..
