Fr. Genaro Diwa, the new Executive Secretary of the Philippine Episcopal Commission on Liturgy (ECL), said today that the Commission decided last week to organize a new commission on liturgical music (presumably the ECLM). Diwa, who took over from long time Executive Secretary Anscar Chupungco, OSB, said the hope is that they can encourage Philippine composers to work in liturgical music. He also hinted that a national hymnal might be in the future.

Asked about other ECL priorities in the next few years, Diwa said that implementing the new Missal will be the main focus.

The Missal will be on the agenda at the January meeting of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP). Diwa doesn’t yet have an implementation date but January 2012 is one possibility.

Peter Dwyer is Director of Liturgical Press, Collegeville.
