Calvin Symposium on Worship

Great things continue to happen at Calvin. The 23rd annual Symposium on Worship, sponsored by the  Calvin Institute of Christian Worship and the Center for Excellence in Preaching at Calvin Theological Seminary, took place January 28-30 at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It was a huge success! With 1,500 attendees, including 160 overseas international guests from 39 countries, the symposium was larger than 2009 and 2008. Thirty “book group” leaders attended, representing 30 groups (250 readers) from across the US and Canada that read our publication The Church of All Ages: Generations Worshiping Together this past summer and fall.

There was a plenary panel and afternoon seminar on “Worship, Forgiveness, and Reconciliation-Global, Local, and Personal-with both international and North American presenters, moderated by John D. Witvliet. Panelists were Elias Chacour (Archbishop of the Melkite Catholic Church in Israel/Palestine), Kobus Gerber and Jerry Pillay (pastors in South Africa from different denominations), Setri Nyomi (General Secretary of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches, now in Geneva, but originally from Ghana); Eric Sarwar (pastor from Pakistan), Karen Campbell (pastor from Northern Ireland) and Ed Gilbreath (author of Reconciliation Blues).

There were live video stream our worship services via our website, and lots of participants sent tweets on the event.

Mark your calendar for next year: January 27-29, 2011.
