On the occasion of the bestowing of the “Closed Oyster” award, a commendation for the Catholic Church, the “information blocker of the year.”
As someone who has had her own struggles with the Vatican, its offices, and its highest ecclesial court (over teaching appointments at Catholic Faculties), I experience the current crisis in ecclesial governance and leadership as nothing particularly new. What sustained me then continues to sustain me now: the insight that my baptismal belonging to this church always also means the willingness to be ashamed of what I belong to. Belonging and that willingness go together, there is no belonging — not even in the Church — outside of that pain.
May we see Christ, the bright light shining in the darkness, the Risen Lord who loves us and makes us new.

How is the scandal affecting Catholics’ church-going?
People on PrayTell, including me, have been making connections between the abuse crisis and the upcoming imposition of the newly translated Roman missal. It’s a delicate topic, and the editor has been careful. But with the Church very much in the headlines these days, perhaps the time is now ripe for it to be explored a bit more.
At a time of scandal and embarrassment, let us treasure the reformed liturgy. Let us treasure the bonds which unite us with Catholics around the world. And when we hear the familiar words of the Eucharistic prayer at Mass, let us pray more than ever “for Benedict, our pope.”
