John Ruff, father of Anthony Ruff, OSB, died this morning, Sunday, January 22. He was 87. We offer our sympathy to Fr. Anthony and his family.

Jack Ruff, father of Fr. Anthony Ruff, OSB, died this morning. His obituary can be seen here. We offer our sincere condolences to Fr. Anthony and his family during this time of sadness and loss. We join them in their sorrow and also in the sure and joyful hope of resurrection.

When confronted with the mystery of death we are brought face to face with the truth about life:

We live here for a few days and must move on. In this life we are no more than temporary boarders; only in heaven will we dwell in our own home. A sign that we are only visitors here is that someday we will hear the voice of the Lord commanding us: “Move On!” No one will tell us to “move on” once we are in our eternal home in heaven. Just now we can be nothing but wanderers. As the psalmist declares: “I am but a wayfarer before you, / a pilgrim like all my fathers” (Psalm 39:13).

As long as we live on earth our lodgings will not be permanent. Only when we get to that great land beyond death will the Lord give us dwelling places that abide. This is what he promised when he said: “There are many permanent abodes in my Father’s house” (John 14:2).

—from “Life in the Inn for Travelers,” Reflections on a Dying Life, Donald X. Burt, OSA, Liturgical Press, 2004

As we continue our earthly pilgrimage, let us hold one another up, in faith and in friendship!

Sincerely,

Rita Ferrone, on behalf of the editorial committee

Cardinal Seán O’Malley, OFM Cap., announced today that he has appointed Msgr. James P. Moroney as rector of Saint John’s Seminary in Brighton, Massachusetts on July 1, 2012.

Cardinal Seán O’Malley, OFM Cap., announced today that he has appointed Msgr. James P. Moroney as rector of Saint John’s Seminary in Brighton, Massachusetts on July 1, 2012. Cardinal Seán expressed his gratitude to Bishop Robert J. McManus, Bishop of Worcester, for his willingness to release Msgr. Moroney for this important work.

Msgr. Moroney, a Priest of the Diocese of Worcester for the past thirty-two years (ordained in 1980), is currently professor of Sacred Liturgy at Saint John’s Seminary and also serves as Executive Secretary of the Vox Clara Committee. Msgr. Moroney previously served as rector of the Cathedral Church of Saint Paul in Worcester and as Executive Director of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Secretariat for the Liturgy from 1996-2007. Pope John Paul II appointed him, and Pope Benedict XVI has reappointed him, as consultor to the Congregation for Divine Worship in Rome. He pursued graduate studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University, the Pontifical Liturgy Institute at Saint Anselmo’s, and the Catholic University of America.

Msgr. Moroney is a frequent lecturer in liturgical matters, having addressed the presbyterates of 110 dioceses in recent years. He is author of the recently revised The Mass Explained: An Introduction to the New Roman Missal and host of “The New and Eternal Word” on the Catholic Television Network.

The Cardinal expressed his confidence that Msgr. Moroney would bring “his extensive experience in teaching priests and seminarians throughout the United States to the work of promoting the service of Saint John’s Seminary to the Bishops of New England and, indeed, the Catholic world. His longstanding work for the Holy See and the Bishops of our country has prepared him in a wonderful way for his new role as rector of the Seminary community.”

V. O Lord, save Elizabeth, our Queen.
R. And hear us on the day we call upon you.

If I use this prayer in Minnesota, I’ll use my best British accent. And take a huuuuge breath before the collect. – awr

V. O Lord, save Elizabeth, our Queen.
R. And hear us on the day we call upon you.

V. O Lord, hear my prayer.
R. And let my cry come before you.

V. The Lord be with you.
R. And with your spirit.

Almighty God, we pray,
that your servant Elizabeth, our Queen,
who, by your providence has received the governance of this realm,
may continue to grow in every virtue,
that, imbued with your heavenly grace,
she may be preserved from all that is harmful and evil
and, being blessed with your favour
may, with her consort and the royal family,
come at last into your presence,
through Christ who is the way, the truth and the life
and who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God,
for ever and ever.
Amen.

The bishops of England and Wales have devised this prayer for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee to be read out at Masses on Trinity Sunday, June 3, 2012.

During this Mass, the first reading is replaced by 1 Kings 3:11-14 and the Prayer for the Queen, which has been approved by the bishops, is used after the post-Communion prayer and before the final blessing.
