Alternate Hymn Arrangements

Pray Tell has posted four Do It Rite videos on leading hymns by the organist:

Following up on this, here is a preliminary list of published alternate settings of hymns – with thanks to Chris Stroh, organist at St. Mary’s Basilica in Minneapolis, graduate of St. John’s School of Theology MA in liturgical music, who presented a session of improvisation and service playing this past semester.

What would you add to this list? What alternate hymn arrangements do you recommend?

  1. Craig Philipps: 25 Harmonizations and Descants (Selah)
Bruce Neswick: A Liturgical Miscellany, Vol. 1 and 2 (St. James Music Press)
and the classic T. Tertius Noble: Free Organ Accompaniments to 100 Well-Known Hymn Tunes (Alfred)(slow tempos required!), and Fifty Free Organ Accompaniments to Well-Known Hymn Tunes

St. James Music Press has some other collections too that are worth a look, particularly with a subscription to their download service. You can simply enter the hymn tune name in their search box, and whatever they have will pop up.

  2. Colin Mawby: “Hymns for Occasions” (Kevin Mayhew). What is nice about this collection is that it isn’t just a last verse — for each of the 100 tunes, he has provided an introduction, the standard harmonization, an interlude, and then the reharmonization.

I second the Noel Rawsthorne collection. It’s fabulous.
