Taylor W. Burton-Edwards, Secretary of the North American Academy of Liturgy announced today the death of Linda J. Vogel, 1940-2017.
Linda was a United Methodist deacon, Christian educator, student of ritual, and advocate for all who faced poverty, injustice, and oppression. Author of multiple books on child formation, adult formation, older adult ministries, sacramentality, and ritual and pastoral care in the face of grief and death, Linda died as she taught, surrounded by loved ones and the faithful community of Pilgrim Place, where she had retired with her husband, Dr. Dwight W. Vogel, in 2005.
She completed the MRE at Andover Newton in 1964, and the PhD in Adult Education and Gerontology at the University of Iowa in 1981. Her teaching career included twenty years at Westmar College (1965-1985) and sixteen years at Garrett-Evangelical Theological School (1987-2003) from which she retired as Professor Emerita and Senior Scholar. She was an active member and contributor to the ritual life of the Order of Saint Luke. She and her husband, Dr. Dwight W. Vogel, adopted and raised three children and wrote two books together on sacramental theology and sacred time.
May she rest in peace. And may all who mourn her passing find comfort.
