“Saint John XXIII, whom we remember today…”

Pope Francis’ tweet this morning was succinct: “Like Saint John XXIII, whom we remember today, let us witness to God’s goodness and mercy before the Church and the world.”  What Twitter didn’t leave room for was a reminder that the memorial for Pope John XXIII in the liturgical calendar is not his day of death (June 3) but, instead, the day on which he opened the Second Vatican Council: October 11, 1962 — fifty-five years ago today.

  1. Also in the news today, re Pope Francis’s Twitter account: the Pope just passed the 40 million followers mark — which seems to tie him with Donald Trump who became Twitter’s most followed global leader a few weeks ago, overtaking Pope Francis at that point.
