The National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM) announced today that it has named Steve Petrunak as its new President and CEO. Petrunak begins today in a transitional role as Vice President for NPM Operations, and will assume a fulltime role on May 1, 2017. He will relocate to the Washington D.C. area.
The current president, Msgr. Rick Hilgartner, has served NPM in a part-time capacity since 2014. He now has increasing pastoral responsibilities in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Hilgartner will remain as NPM president until May 2017, at which point he will take on a new position for NPM of Director of Ecclesial Mission and Identity, which entails an advisory position on the NPM Board of Directors.
Petrunak has directed a very strong music program at St. Blase Parish in Sterling Heights, Michigan. He is a published composer and recording artist, and has served NPM in many capacities including as a board member. He is currently the co-chair of NPM’s National Committee for Finance and Development and is responsible for writing and beginning to enact an aggressive development plan.
Before he became a full-time pastoral musician, Petrunak was a successful businessman and rose from an entry-level position to executive management in a manufacturing service center in the steel industry. Msgr. Hilgartner states: “Steve’s gifts… his financial and administrative background combined with his experience as a musician . . . are a rare find and a necessary combination. He is passionate about NPM’s mission and he has the skills and experience to lead.”
Petrunak will be blessed in his new position at the 2017 Annual Convention in Cincinnati this coming July.
Members of the NPM Board of Directors are Anne Ketzer, Jeremy Helmes, Lena Gokelman, Sister Kathy Harmon, Meg Matuska, and Msgr. Richard Hilgartner.
