Rome Reports has created a YouTube video outlining the statistics published in the 2012 edition of the Annuario Pontificio. Surprisingly, the news is almost entirely positive! In almost all categories and regions the Church has seen significant increases. Only religious life and the Church in Europe are in decline.
In other news, the USCCB issued a press release yesterday on the Permanent Deaconate in the United States. Their survey shows that:
- Most are married
- Most are white
- 70 percent are 60 or older
- The number of deacons at retirement age is increasing
- There is more ethnic mix than in the priesthood, but less than in the general Catholic population
Bishop Michael F. Burbidge, chairman of the Committee on Clergy, Consecrated Life and Vocations, noted that “as their median age increases, we must take necessary steps to invite others to hear the Lord’s call to serve as deacons.”
