Still More Knots to Untie

In his most recent Viewpoint column, Msgr. Francis Mannion calls “Mary Undoer of Knots” (Maria Knotenlöserin) the “best new papal Marian devotion.” In the waning days of 2013, members of the Pray Tell family are sharing what particular knots they hope Our Lady can help untie in 2014. (See earlier submissions by Paul Ford and Paul Inwood and by Diana Macalintal.)

Today Peter Rehwaldt writes the following. (Scroll down for Teresa Berger’s prayer.)

The knot I’d like to see untied is the knot of unwarranted certainty, tightened by . . .

. . . political leaders who are absolutely certain that their policy is correct.
. . . religious leaders who are absolutely certain that their understanding is right.
. . . scholars who are absolutely certain that their viewpoint is unimpeachable.
. . . students who are absolutely certain that their outlook is incontrovertable.
. . . parents who are absolutely certain that their worldview is unassailable.
. . . .children who are absolutely certain that their understanding is complete.
. . . theologians who are absolutely certain that their interpretation is precise.
. . . .translators who are absolutely certain that their choice of words is without possible improvement.
. . . .and . . .
. . . liturgists who are absolutely certain that their approach is infallible.

  • Mary, untie the knots that prevent us from living on this precious earth in communion with everything God has created.
  • Untie the knots that keep us from lives of simplicity, gentleness, and restraint.
  • Untie the knots — oh so tightly pulled — that make growth and profit seem to be the path to flourishing.
  • Untie the knots that disable us from hearing the groaning of creation.
  • Untie the knots that shackle us to life-styles that this earth cannot sustain.
  • Untie the knot that binds us to the path of destruction.
